The Solemn Evensong Service
Trinity Sunday
4 June 2023 6:30 pm

We welcome you to our service of Solemn Evensong. Please join in the words in bold text.

This opening section is said in the seasons of Advent and Lent only.

Dearly beloved brethren, the Scripture moveth us, in sundry places, to acknowledge and confess our manifold sins and wickedness; and that we should not dissemble nor cloak them before the face of Almighty God our heavenly Father; but confess them with an humble, lowly, penitent, and obedient heart; to the end that we may obtain forgiveness of the same, by his infinite goodness and mercy. And although we ought, at all times, humbly to acknowledge our sins before God; yet ought we most chiefly so to do, when we assemble and meet together to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at his hands, to set forth his most worthy praise, to hear his most holy Word, and to ask those things which are requisite and necessary, as well for the body as the soul. Wherefore I pray and beseech you, as many as are here present, to accompany me with a pure heart, and humble voice, unto the throne of the heavenly grace, saying after me;

Almighty and most merciful Father, We have erred and strayed from thy ways like lost sheep; We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts; We have offended against thy holy laws; We have left undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those things which we ought not to have done; And there is no health in us.

But thou, O Lord, have mercy upon us miserable offenders; Spare thou them, O God, which confess their faults; Restore thou them that are penitent, According to thy promises declared unto mankind in Christ Jesu our Lord.

And grant, O most merciful Father, for his sake, That we may hereafter live a godly, righteous and sober life, To the glory of thy holy Name.

Almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who desireth not the death of a sinner, but rather that he may turn from his wickedness, and live; and hath given power, and commandment, to his Ministers, to declare and pronounce to his people, being penitent, the Absolution and Remission of their sins : He pardoneth and absolveth all them that truly repent, and unfeignedly believe his holy Gospel. Wherefore let us beseech him to grant us true repentance, and his Holy Spirit, that those things may please him, which we do at this present; and that the rest of our life hereafter may be pure, and holy; so that at the last we may come to his eternal joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Psalms.

The First Lesson.

Isaiah 6:1–8

Here beginneth the 6th chapter of the prophecy of Isaiah.

6In the year that king Uzziah died I saw also the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple.
6:2Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
6:3And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
6:4And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
6:5Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
6:6Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar:
6:7And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
6:8Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Here endeth the first lesson.

The Second Lesson.

John 16:5–15

Here beginneth the 5th verse of the 16th chapter of the Gospel according to St John.

16:5But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?
16:6But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.
16:7Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
16:8And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
16:9Of sin, because they believe not on me;
16:10Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
16:11Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
16:12I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now.
16:13Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
16:14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
16:15All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

Here endeth the second lesson.

The Apostles' Creed.

I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
Maker of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ
his only Son our Lord,
Who was conceived by
the Holy Ghost,
Born of the Virgin Mary,
Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
Was crucified, dead and buried,
He descended into hell;
The third day he rose again from the dead,
He ascended into heaven,
And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty:
From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead
.

I believe in the Holy Ghost,
The holy catholick Church,
The communion of saints,
The forgiveness of sins,
The resurrection + of the body,
And the life everlasting
.

The Collect of Trinity Sunday.

Almighty and everlasting God, who hast given unto us thy servants grace, by the confession of a true faith to acknowledge the glory of the eternal Trinity, and in the power of thy Divine Majesty to worship the Unity; We beseech thee, that thou wouldst keep us steadfast in this faith, and evermore defend us from all adversities, who livest and reignest, one God, world without end. Amen

The Lent Collect.

Almighty and everlasting God, who hatest nothing that thou hast made, and dost forgive the sins of all them that are penitent: Create and make in us new and contrite hearts, that we, worthily lamenting our sins, and acknowledging our wretchedness, may obtain of thee, the God of all mercy, perfect remission and forgiveness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect for Peace.
